Spanish Colonial Furniture Making (SCFM)
![]() |
The preservation of Traditional Spanish Colonial Woodworking in Northern New Mexico is important to me. I’ve been involved in the making of furniture for over fifteen years now as the owner/proprietor of Spanish Furniture by Rik, and as an Instructor for the Spanish Colonial Furniture Making Program at Northern. My dedication to the preservation of this important cultural craft can be seen by the numerous charity contributions, art shows and instructional activities I do within the Northern New Mexico College Community. You can see my work in such places as Valley Bank, Northern New Mexico College, Las Clinicas Del Norte, The National Hispanic Cultural Center, Santa fe Convention Center to name a few as well as numerous private homes. |
The courses in the Spanish Colonial Furniture Making program (either certificate or degree) cover the basic concepts of woodworking: selection and preparation of stock, adhesives, abrasives, layout of stock, tools and machines (portable and stationary), basic joinery techniques and hand carving techniques common to making Spanish Colonial furniture. While there is some formal instruction, most of the student's time is spent working on projects with the instructor as facilitator.
The spirit and enthusiasm of the students reflect the attitudes of the instructors, recognized as master craftsmen. It is a program where the work may be done by the hands, but the drive and inspiration come from the heart!
By the program's completion, students will have finished their required portfolio and will have displayed their work at various shows, festivals and tours.
