WELCOME
The Office of Grants Development and Special Initiatives supports the mission of the College and enables the fulfillment of College goals and objectives through the pursuit and use of external resources – using government and foundation grants, private gifts, contracts, cooperative arrangements and partnerships to improve how we serve our students and communities. The Office supports the work of the College’s special projects directors and grants-seekers, and develops partnerships with community organizations, postsecondary institutions and other agencies.
HOW WE WORK WITH GRANTS-SEEKERS:
Consultation
If you have an idea for improving your program or office, or there is a student or community problem you would like to address, or if you know of a specific grant opportunity, contact our Office and we will work with you to develop a strategy for applying for funds. We can work with you on clarifying the application’s ideas and purpose, tailoring the concept to the needs of the funding agency, and determining the best way to present your case.
Research
We can assist grants-seekers in locating the appropriate funding agency for their ideas, as well as learning more about the funding agency’s mission, interests and requirements so that the proposal has a greater chance of success.
Writing
The Office provides technical assistance, editing and other advice to proposal writers across campus. Because you are the content expert, you will need to produce a draft proposal and participate in producing the application document. When appropriate, we will help with the writing process, and will provide “boiler plate” institutional information, statistics and history that may be required by the funding agency.
Coordination
The Office keeps track of all funding applications submitted by the College, and assists the grants-seeker in obtaining the needed approvals and signatures, as well as with communication, coordination and liaison with other offices at Northern or with external partners. The Office can convene planning teams to help develop applications and helps coordinate grants-seeking activities to ensure that they are in keeping with the College’s mission, priorities, plans and goals.
Proposal Workshops
The Office will offer periodic grantsmanship training workshops open to all faculty and staff. These workshops are designed to be appropriate for both novice and experienced proposal writers.
Post-Award Services
The Office provides project directors with advice and technical assistance with managing, reporting, budgeting and other project management tasks. The Office also assists the staff of currently funded projects with the development of continuation applications.
