Launched in July 1999 by the Higher Learning Commission, the Academic Quality Improvement Program infuses the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. With AQIP, an institution demonstrates it meets accreditation standards and expectations through sequences of events that align with those ongoing activities that characterize organizations striving to improve their performance.
Northern New Mexico College applied and was granted AQIP status with the Higher Learning Commission in 2005; gained re-accreditation utilizing AQIP in 2007 - including a change of mission from a two-year serving institution of higher learning to a four-year degree serving institution; and is currently updating its System Portfolio in anticipation of its re-accreditation in the 4th quarter of 2008.
