How to Apply for Financial Aid
1. APPLY FOR A PIN NUMBER
You can apply for a PIN at any time. Your PIN is considered your e-signature on the FAFSA. Your pin will be mailed to you in a few weeks, or if you supply an email address your pin can be emailed to you in a few days. For more information on what you can do with your pin refer to the website listed above.
2. FILE YOUR FAFSA (FEDERAL SCHOOL CODE 005286)
There are two ways that you can file your FAFSA:
A.) The FAFSA is available after January 1st at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will
want to file the FAFSA after you have completed the previous year’s taxes.
Be sure to list Northern on F AFSA using the federal code 005286.
B.) Or you may contact our Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at
(505) 747-2200 to set up an appointment to help you complete the FAFSA.
They will inform you as to what information you will need to bring in at
the time of your appointment.
3. RECEIVE CONFIRMATION
The Department of Education will send you your Student Aid Report (SAR) the result of your FAFSA. If you provided an email address on the FAFSA you may receive the SAR via email. Review the information carefully. If corrections need to be made, please contact the Financial Aid Office at NNMC (505) 747-2128 and they will be happy to advise you as to what to do next. If everything is correct please keep you SAR for your records. The Financial Aid Office at NNMC will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) electronically. We will inform you by letter if any documentation is needed to continue processing your financial aid.
4. CORRESPONDANCE
Occasionally, you may be asked to complete additional forms to help in verifying information you provided on your FAFSA. Immediately submit the requested financial aid documents to Northern New Mexico College Financial Aid Office. A Financial Aid Award letter will be sent to you. You do not need to return the letter unless you have or were awarded work-study, or you do not plan to attend Northern. If you are awarded a grant, it will automatically be accepted. Grants are disbursed each semester based on your and will be prorated if you are not enrolled full-time. You may be asked to return a portion of your grant if you do not maintain your enrollment status for the entire semester (see our Census Policy.) Also be advised that receiving outside resources at any time during the academic year will reduce your eligibility for grants (see our Overawards Policy).
