Northern Celebrates El Rito Campus Revival with Alumni and Community

EL RITO, N.M. — September 26, 2025

Northern New Mexico College marked a historic milestone on Friday, September 26, as alumni, community members, faculty, staff, and students gathered at the El Rito campus to celebrate the revitalisation of one of New Mexico’s oldest educational landmarks.

The event — Northern Rising: A Celebration of Heritage and Renewal, honoured the enduring legacy of the Northern New Mexico Normal School while unveiling newly restored facilities that reflect both the college’s roots and its forward-looking mission.

A Day of Pride and Remembrance

Highlights of the celebration included the unveiling of El Portal del Águila (Normal School Alumni Memorial Wall), a tribute to every student who attended between 1909 and 1969. The memorial was made possible through the dedication of the Northern New Mexico Normal School Alumni Association, with special recognition to President Leo Valdez and Ted Martinez, who led the committee that raised funds and brought the project to life.

The ceremony opened with a moment of silence honouring alumni who have passed away, followed by reflections on the shared history that binds generations of students who once called El Rito home.

One of the most moving moments came when Cleo and Raymond Lobato, members of the Class of 1958, joined President Hector Balderas and student athletes to cut the ribbon at Cutting Hall, officially reopening the renovated dorms where the couple first met over six decades ago.

The restored residence halls feature original vigas and a blend of traditional and modern amenities, including a game room, library, reading room, and laundry facilities, transforming the space into a vibrant hub for future students and visiting scholars.

Investing in the Future

President Balderas expressed gratitude for the financial support that made these renovations possible, including $700,000 from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Casa Connection Housing Grant and $1.25 million from the New Mexico State Legislature.

“These investments breathe new life into our El Rito campus,” Balderas said. “They honour our history while preparing us for a future of innovation, sustainability, and educational opportunity.”

Balderas also shared plans for continued improvements, such as restoring the campus tennis and basketball courts and pursuing an energy storage project designed to make both the campus and the surrounding community more resilient.

Community and Connection

The day concluded with guided tours of the dormitories and a community lunch at the El Rito Café, where stories, laughter, and shared memories flowed easily. The celebration underscored Northern’s commitment to preserving its heritage while fostering innovation that serves Northern New Mexico’s diverse communities.

“Revitalising El Rito is about more than restoring buildings,” said Balderas. “It’s about restoring pride, connection, and possibility.”
